Hygge? What’s that? And why do I want it? And how do you even pronounce it? It’s a great way to feel cozy and pamper yourself with an at home spa experience. So yes, I want that!
What is hygge?
What the heck is hygge, anyway? It’s a Danish idea and the word itself roughly translates to coziness. More specifically, it refers to acknowledging and enjoying a moment that is cozy, or special. You pronounce it, “hue guh.”
It’s easy to incorporate hygge into your every day life and pampering routine. You can create an inviting environment, but even more importantly, you can pamper yourself to create a sense of hygge.
What is hygge? It’s about enjoying a moment of coziness. Here are our tips on how to hygge.Click to tweet
What hygge means to me
When I think of hygge, I think of spending an evening curled up by the fire under a warm blanket with a cup of hot chocolate. But sometimes, hygge involves pampering. Many women give so much of themselves that they can sometimes forget to give to themselves. And that’s where hygge can be revitalizing.
Women work seriously hard and deserve some time to be pampered. We’re here to help you score a win this holiday season with some great gift ideas. And if you want to treat yourself, your secret is safe with me. If there’s someone who may need a little help selecting a gift for you, be sure to share this post with them.
Raise your hand if you know a busy mom who puts everyone else’s needs before her own.
Balancing work with family and having a life is hard. She needs some hygge in her life. And it’s totally okay if your hand went up too. We all need some me time. And it if it’s the holidays, you may also be feeling a bit of seasonal overwhelm. Before you get the holiday blues, take some time for yourself with hygge.
That’s right. If you know someone who feels like her work is never done, give her some relaxation. Let her have some time off from taking care of everyone. Let her have some peace and quiet. Plan ahead to give her some time off on a regular basis to catch up on some sleep, some of her favorite tv, drink a glass of wine or tea, and be good to herself.

That’s right. If you’re doing this as a gift, give her a day off – often enough that she can recharge. This may require some planning on your part, but I’d suggest planning a day’s outing that includes having your meals out with your kids so she can have some quiet time. If you really want to go the extra mile, book her into a nice hotel for the night. Recharging doesn’t happen quickly and it shouldn’t be rushed. But you can help the process along with these how to hygge tips.
How to Hygge tips
Self-care really makes a difference. When you’re able to spend some time caring for yourself, you can begin to unwind. And it’s a lot easier to relax when you’re comfortable. Creating a sense of hygge for a pampering session eases you into a relaxed state. And yes, if you’re helping set the scene, that’s things like mood lighting, fragrance, a comfortable temperature and having what she needs to care for her body.
These are some of my favorite things to help me feel cozy year-round, and they make perfect gifts. I’d like to share with you what I do and use to feel this amazing sense of hygge relaxation.
Pamper yourself with an at home spa experience
I want to have clean, fresh linens on the bed, a nice fragrance in the air that calms me, and some nice ambient light. And of course, there’s plenty of quiet. I like quiet-time the best, but some people may enjoy some nice soothing music.
I have two favorite things to use, and you can use them together to create a cozy environment. I like to light a deliciously fragrant candle and turn on a Himalayan salt lamp. Some even say that salt lamps provide health benefits, particularly to allergy sufferers. Whether you buy into the health benefits of salt lamps or not, the light they emit is absolutely gorgeous and calming.
If you set one up in your bathroom, but sure to keep it away from steam and use an exhaust fan. Excess humidity can actually cause the salt to dissolve, so be mindful of where you place it. I like to move mine out of the bathroom when I’m done with my pampering session just to be on the safe side.
Creating a hygge home spa experience
One of my favorite things to do to relax is to take a nice bath. But there’s so much more to that experience. I like to not only soak but be ready with my towels on a warmer, a cashmere robe and soft slippers to wear afterwards, and wonderful products to use while I’m in the bath.
I was first introduced to towel warmers when I lived in England. Oh my! How can one go back to cold towels after getting used to such a treat? It feels so good to get out of the shower or bath and wrap up in a big, fluffy towel that feels like it’s fresh from the dryer. Here’s a pro tip – if you are cold-natured like me, these are great for warming your bathrobe and slippers as well if you hang them just right. You can find towel warmers that are free-standing, or you can have one mounted to your wall.
For me, a lot of experiencing hygge is about texture. I like how something feels against my skin. So I want a luxurious robe and slippers. If I’m lounging, I prefer a cashmere robe. They are the perfect weight year-round. If I’m soaking, I prefer a heavy terry cloth or plush lined robe as it handles moisture better. If you can, having both types is a true indulgence. I use my lined robe more often as it’s built for everyday use, but I love to curl up outside on a cool morning, wrapped in my cashmere robe while I enjoy a cup of coffee while my dogs romp in the yard. That’s my perfect, hygge morning.
Comfortable, yet stylish lounge wear is a big part of embracing hygge for me. I like to feel chic, yet comfortable. If someone were to show up unexpectedly, I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in my pajamas, ahem, I mean lounge wear. These are both beautiful and feel so good to touch. I love lounge wear that is soft and comfortable as well as stylish and functional.
Footcare is so hygge
And of course, I want some comfortable slippers to complete my outfit, right? I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for fun, adorable slippers. But giant Scooby Doo slippers takes me out of the moment, so I’m looking for something that supports my feet with great cushioning, can be worn outside if I need to make a quick dash to chase the dogs, and that just feels good. A great pair of slipper moccasins ticks the boxes. I’ve been wearing slippers from Acorn for years, and they are amazing.
They hold up well, can be washed, and they feel great! They do run a tad bit large, so be mindful of that should you decide to try a pair. I like mine roomy, so I order my size, but if you prefer a tighter fit, you may want to size down.
But even more important than what you’re wearing on your feet is how you take care of them. There’s nothing like slipping your foot out of your slipper and running rough heels across your or your loved one’s leg to take you out of a cozy moment.
Jamberry Indulgence Footcare Set
I’ve recently fallen in love with Jamberry’s Indulgence Footcare Set. I have painful, diabetic feet, so for me hygge is largely about taking care of my feet as I don’t relax well when my feet hurt. And no one enjoys touching cracked heels. This 3 step system includes a wonderful peppermint foot soak, a peppermint foot scrub and a soothing, moisturizing foot crème. And it comes in this darling faux marble cosmetic bag, so it’s perfect for gift giving.

How to use the Indulgence Footcare Set
I like to either set up my footbath or run some water in the bathtub so I can sit on the side to soak. After a great soak, I exfoliate using the scrub. It’s so clean and fresh smelling too! And after my scrub, the moisturizing crème does a great job at softening any callouses I still have. If you have dry skin on your feet, you probably have those little white lines that show where your feet are dry. The crème does a great job at helping these lines heal and diminish in appearance.

Soft skin is perfect for feeling hygge
I like to begin with dry brushing my skin. Dry brushing really helps to exfoliate and is great for the circulation. It leaves my skin feeling so smooth and soft.
How to dry brush
When you’re brushing, be sure to start at your feet and work your way up. You always brush toward your heart, so when you’re doing your arms, remember to brush that direction. Use gentle strokes. The bristles are meant to be a bit rough, so you don’t want to dig in when you brush. A light touch is great.
After you dry brush, you’ll want to take a shower to wash away any dead skin you have removed. Dry brushing also helps to flush toxins from your body, so washing those away is also important. I like to take a very quick shower to rinse it all away, and then take a nice luxurious soak.
Pamper yourself with bath soaks and massage oils
When I’m soaking, I love to have a bit of fragrance. There are so many options. Sometimes, I like to run a bath and add epsom salts and some lavender essential oil. Sometimes I like to use a bath bomb. And I have also enjoyed using a tea infuser. These create a softer fragrance, but it still makes for a delightful bath experience.
After I’ve soaked, I like to use a nice massage oil to soften my skin. The lavender massage oil from Kneipp does a great job at locking in moisture. I like that their fragrances are scented with essential oils, so I’m also being good to myself when I use their massage oils. The fragrance lingers for a while too, so I enjoy being able to curl up in my comfy loungewear, wrapped in my cashmere robe, and enjoy the fragrance a little longer. It keeps me in the moment, and that’s truly what hygge is all about.
I also enjoy adding a face mask, hair conditioner, or a hand treatment to my pampering sessions too when I have time to do it all. It really does make a perfect at home spa experience. I would love to hear what makes you feel cozy. Do you have some favorite pampering tips?
