Kehlani’s journey and SweetSexySavage
Kehlani’s journey has been one full of tiny triumphs and big bumps.
She was the vocalist of a band during her teens that nearly won “America’s Got Talent.”
It was enough to make us stand up and notice her. So when she went solo and started recording mixtapes and writing for bigger names, her work was in heavy rotation. However, the dangers of quasi-stardom took her down a road that ended in a suicide attempt.
Kehlani’s album, SweetSexySavage, shows us that she’s alright with not being totally alright.Click to tweet
Her latest release, SweetSexySavage is, I believe, an attempt to show us that she’s alright with not being totally ‘alright.’ While some of the tracks are sad or slightly juvenile in their angsty teen complaints of lost love, she shows she can also have fun and be silly, oh, and did I mention she can sing too.
Kehlani’s Girl Anthems
She throws us a few girl anthems with “CRZY” and “Distraction.” And goes one step further with “Do U Dirty” where she talks about being a player. Things are a little more melancholy on tracks like “Everything is Yours” and she shows the vulnerability of admitting fear of commitment in “Not Used to It.” But we get to see a lighter side in songs like “Gangsta” (also featured on the Suicide Squad soundtrack) and “Undercover.”
One of my only criticisms is that the album was on the long side. But I came out the other side with at least 5 tracks that I plan to play over and over again.
“Gangsta,” “CRZY” & “Get Like”
Score: 4 out of 5
